Defense Attorney argues Female Genital Mutilation is a Religious Right

June 21, 2017

The defense attorney for two Detroit doctors accused of female genital mutilation is arguing that the practice is a religious right. The doctors have been accused of conducting over 100 procedures of this kind on girls as young as seven. The defense is the first of it's kind to be argued against the law that banned Female Genital Mutilation in America. The defendants are apart of a religious sect called Dawoodi Bohra. The defendants aren't likely to be successful with this defense but if they are this would be a clear and present danger to all young girls affiliated with this religion.
