Witches, Goblins, and Ghouls: How Some Christians are playing with the occult

November 1, 2018

“Prophecy is not relevant for today.” “If it’s not in scripture, then it is not from God.” “He doesn’t guide you in your decisions through the prophetic." These things went away when Jesus came.” “Look at how wacky some of those people get, that’s not God, so we aren’t going to allow any of it here. We are going to play it safe.” Due to several generations of this thinking, in certain church circles, we have many Christians desensitized to the evils of witchcraft who also have no clue there is revelation available through the power of the Holy Spirit. The supernatural has been rendered silent

I could go on and on. The lack of internal policing in the Charismatic movement has led to the chains we now see to anything bordering on the supernatural that is in many churches today. I struggle with why any Christian would choose to believe that an all-powerful God would still allow psychics, witches, and mystics to hear from the dark side while having His own beloved children navigate so deaf and blind. God is not that cruel. “And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying:

‘This is the way, walk in it,’ when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.” Isaiah 30:21 ESV

This is how God wants to operate. The New Testament boldly declares God will still speak to us:

And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams” Acts 2:17 ESV.

We are designed for the supernatural; our spirit craves it. Teens are leaving the powerless silent supernatural churches in droves. They know there is something more and most of the church is silent when it comes to the tangible evidence of the supernatural impacting our lives today, so they start searching. Not only are some churches refusing to address the supernatural, many are condemning it as evil. Churches or individuals, who refuse to believe the Holy Spirit still speaks to believers today, attack anything resembling the supernatural.  Some Christians, while denying God’s power, credit witchcraft and claim those who operate in the prophetic are false prophets filled with demonic influence. People, then disillusioned, fall into sly sorcery that they have been trained in since birth. There is a vulnerability, and gullibility because they do not have the skill set or proper training in how to deal with the supernatural that is devoid from their church life.

Look at the power Disney Corporation has over our children… 100% sly sorcery. I am not saying we should avoid Disney (because I don’t), but we need to be using their portrayal of sorcery as teachable moments to showcase the magnificent supernatural power of our almighty God. I believe this is similar to how Daniel in the Bible handled sorcery during his lifetime (elaborated on later). Click thru any TV guide, and this training is reinforced with the majority of shows containing a sorcery bend. They open up a child’s mind to the possibility of sorcery on the demonic side while their parents cheer them on. We are all born supernatural beings. We are spirit, soul, and body; yet, we do not teach the supernatural power of God to the extent we make sorcery available. We do not give people the proper tools to navigate the supernatural from a Godly perspective.

Furthermore, we do not lend credibility to the power of the satanic influence received from the sorcery training being celebrated. Most Christians consider it perfectly harmless; scoffing at those pointing out the dangerously excessive demonic influence. This is intentionally portrayed as innocent and harmless when it is a covert strategy to infiltrate their minds with an acceptance of sorcery.

I have heard people say Christians that profess Jesus who operate in healing are under the influence of the demonic or witchcraft. How does this even make any sense at all? If they profess Jesus, and they are asking Jesus to heal, why would anyone want to give witchcraft or demons credit instead of Jesus? The Bible documents thousands of years of prophets guiding and leading nations, so why would He leave us prophet-less now just to figure it out all on our own? Why would anyone believe a loving God would do that to His children?  There are a few wackadoodles out there that deserve the title of being a false prophet today just like there were during Biblical times. God shows us how we are to handle this. “Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others, judge. However, if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent. For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged.

Moreover, the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.” (1 Corinthians 14:29-33) We are to judge and hold prophets accountable as the spirit inside of us will bear witness.

The book of Daniel is a great example of sorcery and God’s supernatural power in our lives and in government. I notice several things worthy of taking note in how Daniel handled supernatural events. King Nebuchadnezzar in his fury demanded all the wise advisers be put to death. (Daniel 2) The list included: magicians, the enchanters, the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans. Daniel could have allowed these evil men to be put to death, instead, he decided to showcase God’s power and mercy. In verse 24 he requested they are spared and that he be brought before the king:

“Daniel answered the king and said, “No wise men, enchanters, magicians, or astrologers can show to the king the mystery that the king has asked, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream and the visions of your head as you lay in bed are these: To you, O king, as you lay in bed came thoughts of what would be after this, and he who reveals mysteries made known to you what is to be. However, as for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because of any wisdom that I have more than all the living, but in order that the interpretation may be made known to the king, and that you may know the thoughts of your mind.” (Daniel 2:27-30)

This is the purpose of the prophetic; pointing people to the one true Living God with answers needed in this life especially with influencing our governmental leaders in Godly direction for today. We have to stop allowing sorcery to be the primary influence in our government and lives especially when we have the Holy Spirit who is willing to provide for every one of us. We also see how he handled those operating in sorcery. He proved through the prophetic that our God is stronger by shifting the focus to God and away from sorcery rendering them powerless. Later we see where this seemingly generous decision bites Daniel in the backside (almost literally) when he gets set up and thrown into the lion’s den. Again, it is to showcase the awe-inspiring power of the magnificent God we serve. Later on, we again see Daniel point everyone towards the Lord and refuse payment for prophecy.  While gifts were bestowed and received, payment was not requested or demanded. Daniel still honored the king who threw him in the lion’s den even though he had every right to be angry at him. Notice what he said, “O King live forever!”

We do acknowledge the supernatural… just the dark side. We whisper and feel the hair rise on the napes of our necks talking about certain demonic situations. This house has “ghosts,” that park bench is eerie, or grandma so-n-so comes to talk to my child… ha-ha… Isn’t that cute? Why don’t we take authority and cleanse the land and our lives of these evil spirits? Why do we tolerate them? Why do we, in many Christian circles, train our children in the ways of seemingly “innocent” witchcraft thinking it’s harmless? They are taught spells and incantations and are led to believe that there is power in witchcraft in all they watch, how can we expect them to choose a powerless church instead? Why aren’t we teaching them how to operate in the power and authority of the Holy Spirit and utilize Jesus’ name? Why do some violently reject the notion that God wants to walk with us today when He walked with Adam in the garden and He designed us solely for communion with Him?

In September 2018, Sephora decided to sell a “Starter Witch Kit.” Do you know where the overwhelming majority of backlash came from? Actual witches. With valid points such as this one.

“I hope Sephora understands that they have helped many people, who know nothing of witchcraft before studying it, from having very real bad things happen to them WITHOUT FIRST STUDYING WITCHCRAFT.”

Why do we think it is funny and cute to buy starter witch kits, cast make believe spells, and dabble in these occult sorcery activities? The tragic result is what happened in Florida on October 23, 2018. Two middle school girls attempted murder of smaller students in the bathroom where they could overpower them, dismember their bodies, and drink their blood out of a chalice before committing suicide. This is serious, and it is immensely real.

Why do we think it is fun to tour haunted “GHOST” hayrides and houses while pouring horror movies into our minds to get scared by “fake” evil around Halloween? You can’t party with demons or “dance with the devil and not expect him to lead.” (pastor Mark Cuprik) Instead, dance with Jesus and be a carrier of light on a day most Christians hide in their homes or participate in evil.  Why can’t we claim the holiday for Jesus? Why are so many Christians fighting over whether or not we should be celebrating by providing Christ-centered alternatives for our children? Be the light of Christ in whatever alternative you choose. Cowering in the dark waiting for the day to pass so you can go on with life as normal, or celebrating in the darkness, is not bringing Jesus into the situation to shine a light into the abyss.

Why do we have no problem with someone saying I sense an evil spirit, but if they said I sense an angel we scoff? We must acknowledge and ascribe bold, Godly supernatural power to the 2/3rds of the angels that are still God’s!!!! Remember, the Lord has no equal. There is no contest; the Winner has already been proclaimed. It is not God vs satan because he is already defeated. We must operate from this place. We must walk in our God-given Supernatural Authority. We must focus on God, yet deal with demons when presented with them.

Stop giving demons power in your life by making room for them due to lack of belief that any of this is real. Christians, we need to wake up and understand that Satan is covert, not overt and he slyly injects sorcery into anything he can. We must be as wise as this serpent, yet innocent as the Holy Spirit dove. We must believe that no one is too far gone or too wounded. This lie strips the blood of Jesus of its power in your life. We either believe Jesus can heal and restore EVERYONE willing, or we don’t. Who do you believe in? I believe God redeems everything and nothing is beyond His reach or out of His redemptive touch. No more silent supernatural, it’s time to be bold and let our light shine.
